Daily Miracles
“Everyday holds the possibly for a miracle.” That is the statement over the door as you enter into Lydia’s House – a transitional housing opportunity for women seeking refuge in the St. Louis area. That statement is still running through my head, even after we shared the film with the 20 resident women there this evening.
A miracle. That’s what is takes to have the courage to leave an abusive relationship. Or is it?
Maybe it’s just courage. Maybe it’s just faith. Maybe it simply takes a friend reaching out to help another friend. Maybe it takes a community willing to make a difference for their neighbors. Whatever the “miracle” is that brought together the women of Lydia’s House tonight was for a reason. We were able to share the message and stories of Sin by Silence and help empower them in the choices that they’ve made. The choice to leave their abusive partner. The choice to go down a long and hard road of independence. The choice to sit there tonight, watch Sin by Silence, and be moved to tears as Brenda spoke to them about her own struggle with leaving.
Brenda left 11 times. She knows what these women are going through. But, tonight was an opportunity to inspire them in their own decision to leave. Empower them to continue on their journey, no matter how difficult it may be.
At each and every shelter and community screening that we have along coming up on the Sin by Silence tour, I feel as if I need to write the Lydia’s House quote down on a post it and read before it to myself as the lights go down. “Everyday holds the possibly for a miracle.” Everyday we have a chance to make a difference. Everyday we have a chance to change lives. Everyday we could miss an opportunity to help a victim of domestic violence.
